Celebrating 40 Years of Andy Open, Estates and Property Manager

In a world where people often change jobs multiple times throughout their careers, Andy Open has taken a very different path. This year, our Estates and Property Manager celebrates an incredible 40 years with John Wainwright & Co Ltd, a milestone that reflects not only his dedication but also the opportunities and sense of belonging he found here.

Interestingly, Wainwright wasn’t Andy’s first employer. In fact, quite the opposite. “I joined Wainwright in 1986 when I was 18,” Andy recalls. “Before that, I’d had several different jobs and hadn’t really found the right fit.” That all changed when he arrived at Wainwright. “Within a few weeks of starting as a fitter’s assistant, I knew this was somewhere I could see myself staying. It felt like home.” Forty years later, that feeling remains just as strong.

A Career Built on Opportunity

One of the reasons Andy has enjoyed such a long career with Wainwright is that no two decades have looked the same. “People talk about the seven-year itch,” he says. “I’ve probably felt that a few times during my career, but the great thing about Wainwright is that opportunities have always come along at the right time. If there wasn’t a role available, I’d often find ways to develop something new.”

Over the years, Andy has worked across a variety of roles, including the workshop, driver training, health and safety, and quarry development. While he enjoyed each role, he was always interested in the potential of Wainwright’s estate. “I’d always felt there was more we could do with our properties and land. When the opportunity came up to focus on estate management, I jumped at it.”

Today, Andy oversees the management and maintenance of Wainwright’s estate, helping to ensure its properties and land are cared for to the highest standards.

Relationships Come First

Ask Andy what makes a successful estate, and his answer is simple. “It’s all about relationships.” That philosophy shapes how Wainwright works with its tenants and communities. From maintaining properties to supporting those who live and work within the estate, Andy believes trust and long-term partnerships are key. “We want people to feel valued and supported. Building strong relationships creates positive outcomes for everyone involved.”

Preserving the Past, Investing in the Future

Caring for Wainwright’s estate means balancing heritage with modern needs. From traditional farmhouses to historic buildings, maintaining and improving properties is an important part of ensuring they remain fit for the future. “It’s rewarding to see these buildings being cared for and improved,” says Andy. “You’re preserving something special while creating opportunities for years to come.” Maintaining high standards is something he feels strongly about.

“I don’t believe in cutting corners, but I do believe in working efficiently. Consistency and quality are important, and that helps us maintain properties that people are proud to live in.”

Always Looking Ahead

Under Andy’s leadership, Wainwright’s estate has continued to evolve, with ongoing investment helping to preserve its heritage while supporting future growth. He is always looking for ways to improve, whether through property enhancements, estate maintenance, or identifying new opportunities. “There’s always another idea or project to work on,” he says. “That’s one of the things I enjoy most about the role.”

Built for the Long Term

Alongside his drive for continuous improvement, Andy values stability and long-term thinking. Having grown up around large estates, he understands the importance of stewardship and taking a long-term view. Looking back on four decades at Wainwright, Andy can see how much has changed, but also what has remained the same.

“It’s a long way from where I started as a fitter’s assistant, but the constant has always been Wainwright and what the company stands for. It’s a place where people can build a future if they’re willing to work hard and make the most of the opportunities available.”

Forty years after joining the business, Andy’s story is one of loyalty, adaptability and pride in a job well done.

He found a place to call home at Wainwright, and his contribution over the last four decades has helped shape the business and its estate for future generations.
