From Plants to Progress: Meet Debi Brooks
From keeping Head Office running smoothly to supporting operational performance, Debi Brooks has become an integral part of the John Wainwright & Co. Ltd team. We caught up with her to talk about her journey, her new role and what makes Wainwright such a rewarding place to work.
Debi joined Wainwright in 2019 as a temporary Receptionist before securing a permanent position just a few months later. Since then, her role has evolved significantly, reflecting both her commitment to the business and Wainwright’s focus on developing its people.
Following time supporting HR and working as Safety, Health and Environment Administrator, Debi became Office Supervisor in 2022. Today, she oversees many of the day-to-day functions that keep Head Office operating efficiently, from managing office contracts and coordinating logistics to maintaining training records, supporting audits and ensuring colleagues have everything they need.
“Much of what I do happens behind the scenes,” says Debi. “If everything’s running smoothly, people probably won’t notice it – and that’s exactly how it should be. I enjoy building strong relationships with our suppliers and helping to create an environment where our people can do their best work.”
Earlier this year, Debi added another string to her bow, taking on the role of Operations Coordinator. Working alongside Operations Director Ben Dormer, she supports the wider operations team through administration, data management and KPI reporting.
“It’s been great to take on new challenges,” she says. “I’ve been given opportunities to learn throughout my time at Wainwright, and I’m grateful for the trust that’s been placed in me.”
Seven years with the business has also given Debi a deep understanding of how things work.
“Sometimes people ask me a question and I don’t realise I know the answer until I start talking,” she laughs. “It’s knowledge that’s built up over time and comes from working with so many different people across the business.”
Away from work, Debi enjoys caring for her ever-growing collection of houseplants. Her dedicated plant room has become her own place to unwind, reflecting a passion for nurturing and helping things grow.
That same mindset carries into the workplace. As a trained Mental Health First Aider, Debi is passionate about supporting colleagues and encouraging open conversations around wellbeing.
“I think it’s important that people feel supported and able to speak openly,” she says. “The culture at Wainwright is something I really value because people genuinely care about one another.”
From joining as a temporary team member to taking on an expanding role that supports both Head Office and Operations, Debi’s journey is a great example of how careers can grow at Wainwright. Her dedication, knowledge and commitment continue to make a real difference across the business every day.
