James Howarth – Man with a Plan

Development Director James Howarth is leading John Wainwright & Co Ltd.’s geographical and product expansion, with operations now underway at the company’s new Marchwood plant. Here’s his vision for the road ahead.

In his role as Development Director, he is leveraging his skillset to lead the Marchwood development and expand into new product areas, including concrete.

“Marchwood is a major investment for John Wainwright & Co Ltd, so we need to get it right,” James said. “The opportunity to join a company like this and take responsibility for such an important project is one I’m proud to be part of.”

A team effort

James, who joined in June 2025, is working with a wider team, including Business Improvement Manager Kevin Saunders, Business Unit Manager Jason Watts and longstanding consultant Simon Lumkin, to deliver the Marchwood project. He brings industry knowledge and an entrepreneurial mindset to ensure this ambitious development succeeds.

“We’re a well-established name in our core operating area, with customers who trust us and value the quality of our products,” James explains. “A key focus is building that same reputation in a new region, where our brand is less established. That means evolving our marketing and building strong relationships to grow a customer base.”

Recruitment is also a priority, particularly in a new labour market. James is working closely with HR Manager Lily Chant and the wider management team to build a workforce that reflects Wainwright’s values and delivers for customers.

“As with all business growth, success comes from a strong collective effort,” he says. “Wainwright’s people are excellent at working together, which puts us in a strong position as operations at Marchwood get underway.”

A long-term project

With operations now in progress at Marchwood, James remains focused on its long-term development.

“It’s relatively straightforward to establish a concrete plant and begin bringing aggregates over the wharf,” he says. “The asphalt element will take longer due to build times, but that gives us a valuable opportunity to strengthen our presence in the Southampton area and build goodwill with customers.”

There are also implications for Wainwright Contracting, which is targeting growth across the South-Central region to support the wider business. James is working with Contracting Director Lee Seviour and his team to identify opportunities with local authorities and private sector clients.

“Marchwood represents a company-wide expansion,” he says. “Having a strong, full-service offering enhances our appeal in the market.”

John Wainwright’s reputation for doing business “the right way” is also a key advantage. “Even where awareness of our brand is still growing, people often recognise what we stand for. That helps us build meaningful conversations and relationships.”

While the scale of the opportunity is significant, so too is the potential return. “I believe we’ll look back on Marchwood as a tipping point in the company’s growth, much like Avonmouth was in 2016,” James concludes. “It’s a privilege to play a part in that journey.”
