Wainwright and North Somerset Council sign four-year resurfacing contract

Representatives from John Wainwright & Company Ltd and North Somerset Council have signed a four-year contract for “Resurfacing and Ancillary Civils Works” in the local authority area.

The contract, worth £4.5m per year, is the first time Wainwright has supplied direct to local government. It reflects the company’s growing stature in the public sector, after several years in the SME supply chain for other contracting companies.

While they were on site for the signing at Wainwright’s Moons Hill headquarters, Councillor Hannah Young (Executive Member for Highways and Transport) and Darren Coffin-Smith (Head of Highways and Parking Operations) were given a tour of the business. This included Wainwright’s quarry, asphalt plant, laboratory, and the Somerset Earth Science Centre.

“It was great to welcome our colleagues from North Somerset and give them a sense of Wainwright’s day-to-day operations,” said Tom Longland, Wainwright’s CEO. “We’re proud to have secured the resurfacing contract and established ourselves as a Tier One supplier.

“This is a significant moment in our history and I commend our contracting team for preparing a successful tender that won us a high-profile and highly competitive contract.”

Wainwright’s Contracting Director, Lee Seviour, added: “To ensure we deliver the very best service, we have added an extra gang to our contracting division as well as investing in new plant. We look forward to working with colleagues in North Somerset Council to serve local communities.”

Speaking about the contract, Cllr Young said: “A huge amount of work has been done this year to review the way the Council contracts highways services to ensure our road network is maintained in the most efficient and cost-effective way.

“When seeking a new partner to deliver our highway services, we wanted to focus on delivering social value, building on the council’s commitment to carbon reduction and protecting the environment. We also wanted to use local skills, talent, and supply chain partners and give people the opportunity to work in the sector.

“Wainwright’s offer ticked all these boxes. I am confident that by working together we will provide excellent services and value for our residents.”
