John Wainwright & Company Ltd awarded North Somerset Council surfacing and minor civils contract until 2027

  • Four-year contract worth total £14m: £3.5m per year
  • First time Wainwright has supplied direct to a local authority
  • Builds company’s profile as Tier 1 supplier to local and national government

Mendip-based John Wainwright & Company Ltd has been awarded a £14m surfacing and minor civils contract by North Somerset Council.

The contract was awarded through competitive tender, with Wainwright scoring especially well on quality, price and social value.

Worth £3.5m per year until 2027, the North Somerset contract will build on Wainwright’s reputation in the public sector, establishing the company as a Tier 1 supplier.

Working as a subcontractor for the likes of Milestone and Volker Highways, Wainwright has long been a part of the supply chain for organisations including National Highways and Bath and North East Somerset Council (BaNES).

The North Somerset Council contract is the first one awarded to Wainwright directly by local or national government.

“We’re excited and heartened to be awarded the North Somerset contract,” says Lee Seviour, Wainwright’s Contracting Director. “We worked hard on the tender and it’s gratifying to see our bid come out on top. We look forward to delivering our customary quality and service for the local authority.”

A key feature of the contract is educational and careers outreach work in the local area, as well as sustainability. Wainwright has a well-established commitment to these activities, including through the Wainwright Futures Foundation and its sponsorship of the Somerset Earth Science Centre.

Councillor Hannah Young, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for highways, said: “I’m really pleased that by working direct with Wainwright the Council will achieve better value for money in our road resurfacing works. This is more important than ever, because local demand for improved road maintenance consistently outstrips our available funding.

“It’s also great news that our local young people will benefit from the careers development support that Wainwright is committed to delivering.”
