NORTH SOMERSET HIGHWAYS TERM MAINTENANCE

Client: North Somerset Council (Milestone)

Completion Date: March 2023

Oatfield Estate, Backwell

North Somerset asked us to inspect the section of the A37 between Temple Cloud and Clutton to assess the impact of winter deterioration. Along with local inspectors, we initially specified hand-lay patching. Due to the available road space, however, the council decided to increase the scope of the scheme to ensure maximum longevity through both machine and hand-laying.

The scheme was spread out over three miles, with patches of various sizes throughout. To enable completion within one restricted shift, we employed two direct labour gangs: one for machine patching and the other for hand patching.

We used our 1.2m milling machine so that patches could be milled more quickly, eliminating the need for hydraulic ground-breaking equipment. This allowed the patches to be milled at a depth of 50mm, with quick filling by our team.

As a result, we minimised traffic disruption and completed the scheme with efficiency and accuracy, and within the time window.
