Somerset Highways tasked us to undertake machine patching works at the heavily trafficked A37 Beacon Crossroads junction near Shepton Mallet.

This busy junction is one of the main routes in and out of the quarries in the Mendip area. It is used daily by HGVs, making it important to select the right material.

The underlying formation showed severe rutting caused by the continual use of the network by heavy vehicles. Working in collaboration with Somerset Highways, we designed binder course repairs for the scheme using Enriched Polymer Modified Binder (PMB) material to aid with rut resistance.

Due to the nature of the junction with its heavy traffic flow, we were given a short working window under restricted hours. We had just one day to plane out 100mm and re-lay 60mm of Wainwright AC20 HDM Enriched PMB and 40mm of Wainwright 14mm EMAT PMB PSV 65.
